Nova Scotia Weekender 03/04.7.09

First thing this morning was to book out of this dump and find somewhere else...after washing me smalls at the laundry. Fortunately I find Merry's b and b down the street at half the price and the place is spotless. I dump my bags and we're off to do the Cabot Trail. It costs 7 bucks to get in and its probably the best money I've ever spent.

Halifax is 5 hours flight time from the UK. You can be here in two days ride, one if you push it. Whatever you do in life come visit here and hire a bike, it really is biking nirvana.

French Mountain. The Highlands here are the only tract of wild land left in Nova Scotia and has been protected as such since the 30's.

This is the road to Meat Cove. This is the good bit. I managed to hang onto my fillings both ways.

Sugarloaf. The clouds roll off into the ocean....

At the bottom of the cove is a small tea room so I decide to stop. I walk in and the place is deserted. Cash till open... I call, no reply, and go into every room trying to find someone. Outside is a wooden veranda and I find the owner in the baby barn painting a sign. How can I describe her hmmmmm a bit cooky maybe?

However she makes me a fresh pot of coffee and a gorgeous piece of cherry pie. I sit on the decking and there's just me, the river, and total silence. The owner says take your time, hell take a nap if you want. When does the tourist season start I ask.....it started when you walked in honey. People here are just super chilled.

Meat Cove is only half way around the trail but I decide to head back to Cheticamp and enjoy the ride back without the picture stops. The Highlands here are the only tract of wild land left in Nova Scotia and has been protected as such since the 30's. Even though its the start of the holiday season there is simply no traffic at all. On a bike it's a dream.
I get back to Cheticamp for tea and have an iced coffee with my meal...the jury's still out on that one. The rest of the night is spend fighting with the internet connection and planning the next day's journey...but as always plans never go smoothly.

The day starts well enough but rain is forecast so I'm off reasonably early. The idea being to ride the rest of the Cabot and get some more pictures. I get past the halfway point and the weather turns rapidly from bad to worse as the cloud starts to move in low and fast.

Riding here anything could happen. Let's hope not...

Through Ingonish, Wreck Cove, French River, Skir Dhu and North Shore.

One should always be happy in the knowledge that there's someone out there having a crappier day than you...

This is the ferry at Englishtown that takes you across the river. As you can see the weather is pants.

From here its a wet windy run to Baddeck. This is the Bras D'or Lake what bit of it I can see.

The decision to go south instead of east is justified by a sky thats darker than hell itself accompanied by sheet lightning. South it is...

It's back across the Causeway along 104 through Antigonsih and New Glasgow until I get to Truro. By then I've had enough and find a cheap motel and crash. Clothes go in the dryer....again. The weather has been abysmal. Let's hope it's better tomorrow.

Today 290 very wet miles.
